Pine To Present At MTV Awards + Quinto Wants To Host SNL + more ST09 Celeb Tidbits

Chris Pine, Star Trek’s new Captain Kirk, continues to move up the celebrity ranks, as MTV has just announced that he will be one of the announcers at this weekends MTV Movie Awards. We have more details on that, plus all the latest on the new Star Trek celebrities.

They may not yet be household names, but with the success of the new Star Trek movie, the new crew of the Enterprise are getting more and more buzz. Here is the latest on each of them.

Pine to present with Sutherland
MTV has made their final presenter announcements for the MTV Movie Awards and according to People, Chris Pine is on the list, to be joined by 24’s Kiefer Sutherland on stage. Other previously announced presenters include Will Ferrell, Cameron Diaz, Vanessa Hudgens, Ryan Reynolds, Denzel Washington, Leighton Meester, Jonah Hill and Lil Wayne. The MTV Movie Awards airs Sunday May 31st at 9PM. More info at MTV.com.

The new Kirk also continues to be the on the list for the Paparazzi and Gossip sites, who continue to be abuzz about his relationship with Hills star Audrina Patridge.

Quinto wants to host SNL
Earlier in the month we reported when Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy made a cameo on Saturday Night Live. Quinto later blogged about that on his website, noting:

such a mindblowing convergence of childhood dreams and creative freedom. i mean - come on. gilda radner?! kevin nealon! jan hooks & phil hartman!!! the history of genius and hilarity and instinct. the possibility of it all. the cast and writers could not have been more generous or welcoming. justin timberlake slaughtered it. and all i can say is: SNL knows how to throw an after party. and after after party. suffice it to say i boarded my 8:30 sunday morning flight to tokyo with literally no sleep. not being hyperbolic. but it all evened out. in the end - and i welcome all of your support in this matter - the simple fact remains: i must host saturday night live imminently. we’re working on it.

Not willing to wait for them to ‘work on it’, Quinto’s fan club (Sylar’s Army) has started a petition to get Zach to host.

And even though Pine has been getting most of the paparazzi attention, Zach’s higher profile has got them on his radar, even catching him playing hula hoop.

Zoe goes to Cannes
Last week was the Cannes film festival and Zoe Saldana was spotted at one of the big parties, the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS 2009 benefit. And of course, she looked beautiful. However the Splendicity celebrity blog isn’t too sure about Zoe’s dress, asking hot or not?

Speaking of Saldana, Star Trek is actually not her only big scifi movie of 2009. Saldana stars in James Cameron’s Avatar coming out Christmas time and some cool new concept art was just released today at MarketSaw.

Pegg gets Rogen for ‘Paul’
Star Trek’s new Scotty, Simon Pegg, also made news this week by casting Seth Rogen for Pegg’s geek comedy Paul, co-written by Pegg and Nick Frost. Paul is a road movie about two sci-fi fans who meet an escaped alien (Paul) on their way to Comic Con. Rogen (who is a Trek fan and played the leader of the Trekkies in Fanboys) will voice the alien Paul

Yelchin gets Terminator buzz
Anton Yelchin, Star Trek’s new Chekov made his second May sci-fi movie debut with Terminator Salvation, playing Kyle Reese (originally played by Michael Biehn in the 1984 The Terminator). The reviews have mostly not been kind to the film, but Yelchin is getting good marks, A good example of this is AICN’s Harry Knowles who in his review said that he ‘hated’ and ‘loathed’ Terminator Salvation, but still he had praise for young Anton:

Anton Yelchin’s the real deal folks. His CHARLIE BARTLETT was great. His Chekov was spot on in JJ’s STAR TREK, but his Kyle Reese. Man, I just wanted to spend time with him. He’s perfect. He’s playing Kyle as a young man trying to find a way to become a member of the resistance, but he can’t get his radio to even work.

Kellogg’s Introduces Limited Edition Eggo Waffles With Star Trek Images

The Kellogg’s promotion for the Star Trek movie has been one of the longer running for the feature film with items starting to appear in stores in March and continuing to this summer. While the Kellogg’s website lists almost every product featuring ST09 images or offers, there have been a few surprises not listed, with the most recent being a limited series of Eggo waffles

Kellogg’s Has One More Surprise: ST Waffles

TrekMovie has already reported on the offer for a Star Trek Warp Plate on nearly every variety of Eggo Waffles. However, those boxes feature Star Trek art yet regular waffles. Now, Kellogg’s has surprised fans with waffles that have edible images on them of Star Trek characters, planets, logos, phrases, and technology. There are more than 25 different waffles available with this limited edition item. The packaging shows the Enterprise and some of the waffles, and includes a Starfleet Delta Shield Game.

Those familiar with my career in Starfleet know that this isn’t my first experience with Earth’s past as I helped defeat the Borg during the First Contact mission. However, it is the first time I have eaten waffles with images on them. Amazingly, they taste exactly the same as regular Eggo waffles with the bonus fun of the Star Trek images. As you eat your Nero waffle, say things like "I would rather suffer the loss of Romulus a thousand times than not eat my Eggo Waffles!" I purchased 6 boxes of Star Trek Waffles and got 22 of the "more than 25" different designs (there are 8 waffles a box). For those desiring a checklist, here are the confirmed waffles.

Johnathan Crocker:Zoe Saldana: Star Trek

She’s playing a Star Trek sex symbol and a 3D alien. But Zoe Saldana says it’s okay to be a geek…

You’re in Star Trek. So you’re a geek, right?
I am actually! I’m very proud to say I am a geek. But I’m kind of a cool geek. I grew up in a very sci-fi home so I’ve seen a lot of sci-fi movies, from Dune to Alien, 2001, ET, Batteries Not Included… All these films I go crazy for. But never Star Trek.

Was that why you weren’t sure whether to accept the role of Uhura?
Even though I’ve wanted to work with JJ Abrams, I was worried that it could have backfired on my career. But when JJ told me the kind of Star Trek he wanted to make, I wanted to be a Star Trek fan now. He writes amazing roles for women.

He wasn’t afraid to put you in a very short skirt either…
Oh, no, no, no… He was not afraid at all! That was a combination of JJ and the costume designer wanting to keep the trendy ’60s style of the original show.

How does it feel to be a sex symbol for Trekkies?
Oh God, I don’t know! Now I’m a sex symbol for geeks? What have I done…

Any freaky moments with Trek fans?
Not yet, no… I’m very happy to say not yet. But I did have a driver that I had to spend the day with. And he opened his trunk of his black sedan and it was filled with Star Trek memorabilia.

That does sound a bit weird…
I don’t go that crazy when I think about those sort of things happening at the time. But I’m thinking ‘Okay, is this normal for a man to drive around in a sedan with Star Trek memorabilia in his trunk?’ No. Freaky!

Who do you prefer, Kirk or Spock?
Oh God… It depends! I suppose it would have to be Spock for now.

So pointy ears are a bonus?
Hmm, I don’t know… Maybe in the sequel, I wouldn’t mind giving it a go with Kirk. He’s has those dreamy blue eyes. He brings a very interesting, rebellious manliness to the part.

Is that the kind of guy you go for?
I tend to be very picky, so I look for the perfect man! So it Spock and Kirk can mix, they’d become my perfect man. That’s the kind of guy I’d go for. I don’t only go for muscles, I don’t only go for brains. You just need to have a little bit of a bad boy and a geek and then you’ve got the perfect guy.

Easily pleased, then.
Well, it’s not like you guys make it easy for us, either!

How do you chill out?
I’ve been resting a lot. I’ve been doing a lot of resting. And definitely catching up on my wine and my friends. That’s crucial!

Are you playing an alien in James Cameron’s new 3D sci-fi epic Avatar?
Yes. They’re called the Naa’vi. I’m like the Princess Naa’vi. My character and Sam Worthington’s character are caught in the middle of this huge war between this two planets.

Do you get to do much action?
It was nothing but that! I fell off a horse. I had a horse step on me. I was taking archery lessons. Training in martial arts. Learning a new language. For seven months, six days a week. I was loving it.

Cameron’s keeping eveything very secret. What can you tell us about it?
The 3D motion capture looks totally real. It’s crazy as hell and it’s going to fucking make your palms sweat.

Star Trek Finishes 3rd Week with $290M Globally + Predictions For Weekend 4

On Thursday Star Trek brought in $1.87M in domestic sales, which ranked it close fourth behind Angels & Demons ($1.92M). This, combined with its international sales, brings Star Trek’s three week total up to $289.8M. More box office details below, including some predictions on what Star Trek can expect for its fourth weekend.

Star Trek’s total domestic gross is now $196.7M. It’s third week total was $35.1M, which puts it between the third weeks of Batman Begins ($26.4M) and Iron Man ($40.9). Here is an update of the domestic chart for Star Trek we did for our two week summary last Friday comparing the new Trek film with other recent ‘franchise reboots’ and big summer movies.

Star Trek also brought in $1.1M in overseas sales, bringing the total international take to to $93.1M. This brings Star Trek’s three week total global gross $289.8M

Should break $300M this weekend - eyes on Japan
Since it was released two weeks ago, Angels & Demons has been battling it out with Star Trek (with each winning 7 days), but box office prognosticators are predicting that Star Trek will beat A&D to come in 5th this weekend behind the four films released over the last two weekends (Terminator Salvation, Night at the Museum 2, Up and Drag Me To Hell). Star Trek’s fourth domestic weekend predictions range from $14M at boxofficeguru.com to $14.6 at boxoffice.com, and readers at BoxOfficeMojo are predicting $14.8. One thing showing confidence in Star Trek’s continued ‘legs’ is that its screen count is only dropping 13.5% for its fourth weekend, for a total of 3,507, which is actually a few more screens that Angels & Demons will have for its 3rd weekend (3,464).

There are no predictions for international sales, but one thing to keep a look at will be how Star Trek performs in Japan where it opens today. Expectations should not be too high as the Trek franchise has not been a big earner in Japan and there are no big international box office stars in the new film. The last Trek film (Nemesis) only made $565K in Japan.

Regardless, Star Trek should break $200M tonight or tomorrow domestically and $300M worldwide sometime this weekend.
