J.J. Abrams Offers 'Cloverfield' Sequel Update, Ponders Having The 'Star Trek' Sequel 'Go Gorn'

"I have to admit," J.J. Abrams said the other night on the National Board of Review red carpet, "the ['Star Trek' sequel] is really all about the Gorn." As any self-respecting "Trek" fan knows, the Gorn are a green-skinned humanoid race resembling giant lizards.

"We just thought it would be fun... to go Gorn," he said with a grin, driving the joke home.

Abrams wasn't all jokes on the red carpet however. He did have a few things to say about two upcoming sequels, "Star Trek" and "Cloverfield," when questioned by MTV's Josh Horowitz.

"Yes, we have some ideas about that," Abrams said, referring to the "Trek" sequel. "But it is obviously in the very early stages so it's not something that... we can point to."

The sentiment was pretty much the same for the progress of a "Cloverfield" sequel. "We're working on something right now with that and again, you know, it's early stages."

Josh did manage to disappoint Abrams though. With the juicy back-and-forth Gorn riffing they engaged in, the "Trek" director was shocked when Josh didn't take the obvious bait.

"I can't believe you didn't go for 'Children of the Gorn,'" he said, a wide grin on his face. Spin-off, anyone?
