Might William Shatner Return to Star Trek in Sequel?

Attention fans of William Shatner: Leonard Nimoy's retirement as Spock last week could have a silver lining.

The Starship Enterprise's original Captain Kirk turned down a cameo appearance for 2009's Star Trek movie, citing a reluctance to be overshadowed by Nimoy's relatively large role.

The makers of 2009's Star Trek movie say they haven't ruled out the idea of casting Shatner in the sequel, and now, Shatner need not fear being upstaged by his peer of many decades.

The first movie weaved a time-travel element into the plot, allowing for Nimoy, 79, to return as Spock, even as 32-year-old Zachary Quinto played a younger version of the Vulcan.

Director J.J. Abrams has hinted he'd like to do the same thing for 79-year-old Shatner.

"The point of creating this independent timeline is to not have the restrictions we had coming into this one," he told MTV last year. "And one of those restrictions was that Kirk was dead."

The sequel, whose script has not been revealed, is scheduled for release in January of 2012.
