Star Trek: The Original Series, Season 3 comes to Blu-ray on Dec. 15

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that on Dec. 15 fans of the original "Star Trek" TV series will not only be able to add Season 3 to their growing Blu-ray collections. They'll also be able to see a newly discovered version of the original pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," which includes an alternate monologue by William Shatner as well as different theme music and closing credits. In other words, the differences are slight, but how long has it been since Trekkies got new material like this?

Season 3 features all 24 episodes of the legendary third season in a six-disc set presented in DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio with superior picture quality. BD-Live enabled discs will allow fans to toggle between watching these classic episodes as they were originally broadcast, or the newly remastered versions with enhanced special effects and sound for the best of both worlds--making it one of the first Blu-ray releases with SIGNIFICANT BD-Live content. Every disc is also Mobile BluTM enabled, which allows fans to turn their iPhones and iPod Touchs into Blu-ray player remote controls and download content for on-the-go entertainment.

In addition to the alternate version of the show's pilot and interactive BD-Live content, the set includes new featurettes from "Star Trek" themed panels at ComicCon International 2009, including "The Anthropology of Star Trek" and "The World of Rod Roddenberry," plus a 20-minute piece hosted by David Gerrold, the writer behind the classic episode "The Trouble with Tribbles."

"Star Trek" the original series aired for three seasons and launched a worldwide phenomenon for numerous television series and feature films that continues today. The series starred one of the most pivotal casts in TV history, including Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelly, George Takei, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, and Wolter Koenig.

"Star Trek: The Original Series" Season 3 Blu-ray will be available for the suggested retail price of $118.99 U.S. and $136.99 Canada, but it's available now for $52.99 on amazon.com.
