PETA to crash NASA’s Star Trek Live opening

Intruder alert! PETA protesters are planning to crash the opening of NASA’s Star Trek Live event tomorrow morning. PETA protesters are planning to greet visitors entering Kennedy Space Center and hold up signs in protest of NASA’s planned radiation experiment on monkeys.

Read PETA’s press release about the protest below:

PETA ‘TREKKIES’ TO CRASH NASA’S ‘STAR TREK LIVE’ OPENING TO PROTEST AGENCY’S RADIATION EXPERIMENTS ON MONKEYS

As Stage Show Debuts, Group Will Call On NASA to Allow Animals to ‘Live Long and Prosper’

What: Dressed as “Trekkies,” PETA members will greet visitors to the Kennedy Space Center on Friday and call on NASA to pull its funding for cruel and crude radiation experiments on monkeys. Other PETA members will hold signs that read, “NASA: Let Animals Live Long and Prosper,” a play on the famous line by iconic Star Trek character Mr. Spock. The demonstration coincides with the debut of NASA’s Star Trek Live stage show, in which visitors can play the part of Starfleet Academy cadets.

“NASA should be ashamed of squandering nearly $2 million of the public’s money on a wasteful project that harms animals and won’t protect astronauts,” says PETA Vice President of Laboratory Investigations Kathy Guillermo. “It’s illogical.”

In the experiment, as many as 30 monkeys would be blasted with a harmful dose of radiation. As a result, the animals would likely suffer from brain damage, cancerous tumors, or a loss of motor control. Following the radiation exposure, these highly intelligent and social animals would spend the rest of their lives in a laboratory where they would be isolated in cages and subjected to years of behavioral experiments. PETA points out that the results of these radiation experiments on monkeys cannot be reliably applied to humans and that humane, non-animal alternatives are available.

Where: Across the street from the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, State Road 405, Kennedy Space Center

When: Friday, June 11, 10:30 a.m.
