Book Review : Star Trek Vanguard Precipice

The fifth novel in the Vanguard series continues the trend of showcasing compelling storylines and characters with exciting action scenes. The various characters that readers of the series have come to know have been dispersed across the galaxy. Diego Reyes, former commander of Vanguard and now assumed dead, becomes a political prisoner. Quinn lands in the middle of a major conflict. Pennington partners up with someone he despises, T'Prynn, to help not only her position with Starfleet, but also uncover a major conspiracy. All collide behind a backdrop of a possible war between the Federation and the Klingons. And still the Shedai are a threat...

Newcomers to the saga might be reluctant to start this series, but let me say that Vanguard has been consistently the better one when compared to the Titan books. Author David Mack does an outstanding job balancing the various characters and storylines while making every one of them vital and interesting. He also puts in enough material to make it enjoyable and understandable for readers unfamiliar with the series. Overall, this book is arguably the best one yet.

With all of that in mind, Mack should be slapped for ending the book on a cliffhanger. I already want to read the next book right now, so I don't need prompting! Following the pattern of writers, it should be Dayton Ward's turn. Hurry up!
