Star Trek Online: first gameplay footage!

With only a couple of months to go before its official release, and a mere few weeks before its open beta shindig, Star Wars Online developers Cryptic Studios and Atari have released the first video that shows actual gameplay. Read on for the action.

The clip features those contemptible Klingons attacking Federation ships and, we have to say, the action looks rather slick. But don’t just take our word for it, be your own man – check out the footage below and draw your own conclusions:

Star Trek Online is a hugely anticipated MMORPG (try saying that with a mouth full of Shredded Wheat), that will undoubtedly seek to tap into the mammoth online gaming market that already exists for titles like World of Warcraft, as well as tempting the massive Trekkie fanbase into becoming MMORPGers.

The game is set in 2409, 30 years or so after the Nemesis saga. Gamers will have control of their own ship, with the option of being a Federation captain or a Klingon warrior if they succumb to the dark-side– err sorry, wrong franchise.

Open beta begins on 12 January 2010 with an official release date for the UK of 5 February.
