Next 'Star Trek' Script Not Boldly Going Anywhere Just Yet

Trek' screenwriters deny reports of sequel script being halfway complete

"Star Trek" became a box office smash hit this summer with J.J. Abrams' take on the time-old franchise. And while there has been talk of a sequel adventure to the reboot, it looks like the follow-up is still a while away.

Screen siren Zoe Saldana recently told SciFi Wire that she believed the script to be a work in progress, but screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman said that she's given them far too much credit and that they still have a long road ahead.

“We had about a 15 [to] 30-minute discussion with the whole gang and went our separate ways," Orci told the site. "We're still in the re-reading and taking-it-all-in phase before we actually sit down and start designing it."

Before moving ahead with another project for the franchise, the writing dynamic duo -- who are also responsible for the success of the Transformers movies -- want to weed out the bad ideas in order to find the great ones first. And that in itself is going to take a lot of time as they don't want to rehash old plot lines from the series that have been done before.

"Even when you pitch stuff, sometimes someone will be like, 'Wow, that's like that one episode,'" Orci continued. "So even in trying to stay away from it, you can crash back in there."

His partner in crime was also quick to support him, confirming that they are "only going to do it when it's really right."

They have revealed a few juicy tidbits that they are hoping to incorporate into the movie when it finally goes ahead, including more of the great moments from the series such as the iconic line "He's dead, Jim," which was spoken by Bones on more than one occasion. The new movie will also continue to play on the emotion of the characters without getting too Trek heavy.

One thing both writers remain conscious of though is the alienation of new fans while pleasing the existing fanbase. The new script also may also include Greg Grunberg from “Heroes”, one of JJ Abrams child hood friends who did make a small voice-only cameo in the summer blockbuster. The actor has appeared in several of Abrams' productions including "Alias," "Lost" and "Mission Impossible 3". Grunberg himself has also confirmed that he has a desire to take on the iconic role of Harry Mudd.

It's probable that the new script won't get started until Kurtzman, Orci and Abrams are all available at the same times as producers Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk.

Lindelof won't be available until he gets done with the final season of a little show called “Lost” which he co-created with Abrams so Trek fans should probably sit tight for awhile.
