'Star Trek: Nero' Fills In Movie's Story Gaps... And Kicks Off This Week's Best Bets!

It's an interesting week for comics with movie/television tie-ins, with a lot of fan-favorite properties in the mix—especially for science-fiction fans! Here's what we're adding to our pull list for August 12, 2009:

"STAR TREK: NERO" #1 (IDW Publishing): Remember how Romulan villain Nero (played by Eric Bana) was supposed to have been waiting 25 years to catch Spock after getting caught in that crazy time-bending portal? What was he doing all that time? Well, if that plot element from the recent "Star Trek" movie has been keeping you up at night, you can sleep safely knowing that IDW is kicking off a new series this week that chronicles Nero's off-camera machinations.

Written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones, with art and covers by David Messina, "Nero" follows in the footsteps of IDW's previous, well-received "Star Trek" titles that not only earned kudos from comics fans, but from the Trek faithful, too. It's as close to a sure thing as you get in the world of comics based on movie and television projects, so go ahead and grab a copy.

Farscape"FARSCAPE: D'ARGO'S TRIAL" #1 (Boom Studios): I have a soft spot for the over-too-soon series "Farscape"—probably due to my affection for any and all things Jim Henson Company. Boom Studios has been doing a bang-up job evolving the "Farscape" universe under the watchful eye of series creator Rockne O'Bannon and veteran writer Keith R. A. DeCandido, and this latest miniseries should be more of the same.

Angel: Only Human"ANGEL: ONLY HUMAN" #1 (IDW Publishing): We gave you an early preview of this miniseries back in June, and now it's finally arriving on shelves. Written by Scott Lobdell with interior and cover art by David Messina, "Angel: Only Human" follows two of the television series' most conflicted characters: James Gunn and Illyria. One's constantly struggling against the darkness within himself, the other is learning to deal with the limitations of humanity. Together, they're a pretty a good-looking duo trying to find redemption. Good times.

Honorable Mention: "Hercules: The Knives of Kush" #1 (Radical Publishing): Currently under development as a feature film, Radical's take on the "Hercules" mythology continues to be well-received on both the story and artistic fronts—and certainly worth a look. Their last "Hercules" title, "The Thracian Wars," was a pleasant surprise, and offered a truly fresh take on the legendary hero. Writer Steve Moore returns for this new chapter, so I'm eager to see where he'll go with it.
