A tribute to “Star Trek” - complete with theme music and Vulcan salute — is probably the last thing you’d expect at La Jolla Music Society SummerFest. Yet that was part of the festival’s sold-out “Opening Night Extravaganza,” the first of 13 concerts (through August 23) at La Jolla’s Sherwood Auditorium in the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Enjoyable on many levels, the July 31 performance merged pop culture and high art, tunes beloved by trekkies and themes familiar to classical music buffs. In the process, it showed that the prestigious fest doesn’t take itself too seriously.
