The first Mac Plus 128k to roll off the production line has sold at auction for $8,260. The machine, originally sold for $2,495, was given by Apple to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and sported the serial number “0001” on the back.
The selling price came well above the expected price of between $800 and $1,200 and the computer came with a letter from the Gene Roddenberry’s son, Eugene.
The auctioneers said that that this computer demonstrated the “powerful synergy between technology and entertainment”.
One can but wonder is the Mac inspired any of Roddenberry’s writing for Star Trek: The Next Generation and the technology used on the USS Enterprise D? Presumably it would have been a bit obvious for the ship’s android to have been called Mac ;)
