Last we heard from JJ Abrams was that Star Trek 2 needed to be an allegory to societal issues of today much like Rodenberry’s vision was so many years ago.
“It needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving story. There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn’t mean it should be pretentious. If there are simple truths — truths connected to what we live — that elevates any story — that’s true with any story.”
Other details we got was that they had a direction and it was “cool” but that they were very early in the script stage with Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof writing.
Now we are getting a better sense of the sequel’s direction and to the hopes of many on the web this looks to be an original story. In a recent interview - Collider, quotes JJ Abrams saying:
“In going forward, the fun of this movie series is that we will have the opportunity, given its alternate timeline, to cross paths with any of the experiences, places and characters that existed in the original series, but we have to be really careful, doing that. I don’t want to do something that is so inside that only die-hard fans will appreciate. We’re just now working on the script and just beginning the process of story breaking, but I guarantee you, whatever the story is and whatever the final movie ends up being, I know it will be something that will work on its own terms and be something that you don’t need to know and study Star Trek to get, but if you are a fan, there will hopefully be gift after gift of connections, references and characters that you hold near and dear. At least, that’s the intent.”
Now some rumors have popped up before this interview that some potential pieces of the story could have something to do with Captain Pike’s backstory and his relationship to Robert April, the first Captain of the Enterprise, according to some mythos.
Ultimately I think the direction of an original story is the best and there should be no Khan, let that lie in the original films legend. Now the Robert April idea could be what Abrams is referring to when he says “gift after gift of connections.” That being said I am sure more will be heard soon as they go into production sometime next year. The continuation of making this movie work for fans and non-fans is very smart.http://www.fusedfilm.com/2009/10/jj-abrams-talks-more-star-trek-sequel-story-direction/
