"Star-Trek style" nanomagnet wand could cure cancer‎

The wave of a Star Trek-style magnetic wand over the body may soon bring fresh hope to patients with unresponsive cancers.

UK scientists believe the spaceage device is cost effective and could be trialled in three years.

The nanomagnet may even be used weekly in half hour sessions at GPs' or out-patient clinics.

The treatment involves having stem cells, which are fed with microscopic iron oxide particles, injected into the bloodstream.

These are attracted to the cancer cells which are then killed when a paddle-shaped wand generates a rapidly changing magnetic field heating them 5-6C।

Surrounding healthy tissue without the particles is left unharmed.

Professor Kerry Chester, at the University College London Cancer Institute, said: "With this approach you can see where the nanoparticles go and target therapy."

UK Scientists have made a major breakthrough in pinpointing the NRG1 gene, which is linked to more than half of all breast cancers।
