William Shatner, Victor Garber to Appear in DVD Version of 'Star Trek'

Note to actors the world over: If you don't land the role you wanted in a blockbuster movie, there's always the DVD.

William Shatner did not make the final cut of director J.J. Abrams mega-hit 'Star Trek' when it was released in theaters earlier this year. But the actor -- who played Capt. Kirk before Chris Pine was born -- will be featured on the DVD and Blu-Ray editions, which hit stores Nov. 17.

Shatner is part of one of the DVD extras, called 'The Shatner Conundrum,' in which Abrams discusses why he decided not to include the actor in the reboot.

"Essentially, it's about how do you put him in the movie when you want him in it so badly [when that] story actually seems [to clash] with the story you want to tell," Abrams said recently while promoting the DVD release. "Would it have been fun to have him in the movie? Of course. Would it be great to work with him? No doubt."

While original Trekker Leonard Nimoy made the cut, another actor left on the cutting room floor was 'Alias' star Victor Garber, who is longtime pals with Abrams. He played a Klingon, requiring extensive make-up and heavy costuming. But rest easy, Trek purists, those Klingon scenes were reinserted into the film's complete version.

DVD extras should satiate both fanatics and first-time viewers equally. Abrams said his goal for the extras was to keep insider info to a minimum, instead giving fans "gift after gift" of characters and intertwining stories to feed off.
