Leonard Nimoy “very moved” by new Star Trek movie

With the Spock baton passed, Leonard Nimoy told fans at this weekend's Fan Expo Canada in Toronto that he is very satisfied and very moved by the reaction to this summer’s Star Trek film. The actor, who had a small role in J.J. Abrams’ relaunch of the Trek franchise says it has been amazing to see the reaction to it and is thrilled to see that with new special effects, the writers, directors and actors can put onscreen the types of things he and his colleagues never could.

Nimoy says he saw the film most recently on the plane that took him to Toronto and was especially moved at a pivotal moment in Trek history: when the younger James T. Kirk asks Mr. Spock to be his science officer. The answer “it would be an honor” left him feeling honored to be part of the franchise that fans once thought he wanted no part of.

He says he asked “new Spock” Zachary Quinto if he knew what he was getting himself into, because for Nimoy, it’s been the experience of a lifetime. He told the crowd he regretted naming his first book about his Star Trek experiences “I Am Not Spock.” He says he merely intended to explain the acting process, but instead touched off talk that he wanted nothing to do with the role. He says was blamed for the inactivity in the Trek world after the series went off the air, but upon seeing Star Wars, he knew interest would grow and that he and Spock would be back. Nimoy named his next book “I Am Spock” to set the record straight.

His role in the new movie behind him, Nimoy told fans he is done with acting and with directing (among other films, he directed Star Treks III and IV and Three Men & A Baby). Nimoy is going to concentrate instead on photography. His recent work has followed two themes: the beauty of “full-bodied” women and the feminine aspects of God seen through Jewish mysticism.

It was Nimoy’s second appearance at Fan Expo, having appeared three years ago alongside colleague William Shatner. The last time, he and Shatner never appeared on the convention floor but spoke privately to fans who bought separate tickets. Appearing solo, Nimoy appeared on the floor to sign autographs and sold tickets for a private photo session. His appearance also included the one-hour question and answer session described above. Co-star Walter Koenig (Chekov) was also at the expo for photo sessions and autographs, but the two did not appear together.

His farewell to the fans was very simple: “Live long and prosper. I love you.”
