The Issues of Star Trek 2

Unlike most of the feature films in the franchise, the television incarnations of Star Trek were primarily concerned with using science fiction as a means to explore the hot-button issues of their day rather than merely as a fantastical backdrop for tales of spectacle and adventure (not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you). The sequel to this summer's Star Trek movie will reportedly mark a return to the sort of issue-centric storytelling that its small screen predecessor embodied.

Trek co-screenwriter Roberto Orci told The Los Angeles Times that he and his fellow filmmakers have "literally had two meetings now [about the sequel]. We haven't decided anything but we're starting to circle around some ideas. We got a lot of fan response from the first one and a considerable amount of critical response and one of the things we heard was, 'Make sure the next one deals with modern-day issues.' We're trying to keep it as up-to-date and as reflective of what's going on today as possible. So that's one thing, to make it reflect the things that we are all dealing with today."

When pressed whether that meant the storyline might address the war on terror (vis-à-vis the Klingons), Orci acknowledged that "yeah, those are the kind of issues we're talking about."
