George Takei, best known for his role as Sulu in the original Star Trek series, will visit Dallas on July 19. More recently known for his portrayal as Hiro Nakamura's father on the TV show Heroes, Takei will talk about his childhood experiences and life as a Japanese-American in a program presented by the Crow Collection of Asian Art.
Born in Los Angeles, Takei spent most of his childhood at a camp in Arkansas. He and his family were among the 120,000 U.S. residents of Japanese descent who were interned during World War II. Returning to Los Angeles after his camp experience, Takei pursued an acting career, earning a bachelor's degree in theater from the University of California at Los Angeles. He has made more than 40 films and has had hundreds of guest-starring roles on television shows.
His visit to Dallas is presented in conjunction with The Return of the Yellow Peril: A Survey of the Works by Roger Shimomura at the Crow Collection of Asian Art. The talk will start at 6 p.m. July 19 at Horchow Auditorium at the Dallas Museum of Art. Tickets are $15 for members of the Crow Collection and the Japan-America Society of DFW and students, and $30 for others. Reservations are required. Call 214-979-6438.
