Proverbs, rules, sayings, Fort Lauderdale, Davie and -- Star Trek

Repentant Klingon

At the werkhouse, there’s one of those rules that say don't get in a fight with someone who could end up your boss.

That’s what comes to mind considering what's happening at two city halls, or to be more exact one city hall and one town hall.

Not too long ago, Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Bruce Roberts was squeezed by City Manager George Gretsas to run a better department. Roberts quit and declared himself a candidate for city commission. In March, he won and today sits as a boss over Gretsas.

There’s an undercurrent Roberts could form a majority to give Gretsas the boot, though during the campaign the ex-chief said he could work with his former boss. Keep in mind, Gretsas has been in Fort Lauderdale for five years, about the same life span as his predecessor before getting whacked.

Vows to get along aside, once a substantive threat has made to fire a city manager the issue sits in a commission chamber like a tiger in a cage.

Now a very similar scenario has popped up in Davie. The Sun-Sentinel’s Susannah Bryan reports Ken Cohen, a former top ranking town administrator who was fired, may run next year for town council.

Bryan’s story says, “Were he to win, Cohen would be one of five bosses overseeing Town Administrator Gary Shimun -- the man who fired him.”

Two more old sayings come to mind to describe Fort Lauderdale and Davie.

There’s the ubiquitous but popular: Payback is a bitch.

And then there’s the one from Star Trek (No, not “Live long and prosper.”) It’s the good ol' Klingon proverb: “Revenge is a dish that is best served cold.”

For you Trekkers, here’s the movie clip.

Khaaaaan.
