Comic-Con, which kicked off today in San Diego, as always features dozens of fascinating programs; this year a number of participants have some kind of Star Trek cred on their résumés, as writers, producers, artists, actors et cetera.
First of all, the big rollout of Rod Roddenberry's Days Missing happened this afternoon at Comic-Con, following an amazing panel that discussed the making of Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey, the animated film written by Dr. Harry Kloor. Thursday night Lake Tahoe Community College professor Daryl Frazetti leads a panel that explores the relationship between Star Trek and society.
Friday morning John Cho, the new Hikaru Sulu, will join Brannon Braga for a panel introducing scenes from ABC's upcoming Flash Forward; a surprise guest is promised. Later Friday comic book artist Joe Corroney, who has provided cover art for the new Star Trek comic book series, offers a how-to session. In another session artists Brian Valenzuela and Dawn Brown, who both worked on Star Trek 2009, will be featured in "The Design Process for Film and Television". Production designer Scott Chambliss will be in another session.
Clifton Collins Jr. (Ayel, Nero's second-in-command) joins a panel discussion on The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Saturday afternoon.
Zachary Quinto is slated to appear Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in a panel on new graphic novel titles from Archaia, along with his Before the Door colleagues Corey Moosa and Neal Dodson. What they will reveal remains a mystery.
Also on Saturday, the Comic-Con "Gays in Comics" panel, now in its 22nd year, is led by founding moderator Andy Mangels, author with Michael A. Martin of several bestselling Star Trek novels. Pakistani actor Farin Tahir (Captain Richard Robau in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek) participates in "Bridging Cultues Through Popular Media". A Sunday afternoon program will look back at some sci-fi events of 1979, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
