Michael Giacchino's score for J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek is but the latest in a distiguished history of Star Trek movie and television scores (see Part 1 and Part 2). Giacchino admitted to being a bit intimidated by the task; a story by Anthony Pascale on trekweb.com noted that Abrams sought him out for Alias because he had "played all of the games Giacchino had scored." (Varese Sarabande calls Giacchino Abrams' "musical lieutenant".) ScoringSessions.com revealed that the 107-piece orchestra rehearsed and recorded the score under the code name "Corporate Headquarters".
Generally well-received but with caveats from purists (like the movie itself), Giacchino's Star Trek score at one point was the #1 album on iTunes. A number of people complained about the coy track titles. Saving Alexander Courage's theme for the end credits was a wise move, as the soaring, optimistic theme does not mesh well with Giacchino's darker, action-packed music.
