Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. The big name for MMORPG, but not as big as the phenomenon that MMORPG’s are in the gaming world. In fact, some might say that MMORPGS are the leading weapon that PC’s have against consoles. Unfortunately, the gameristic achievements behind current Massive Multiplayer Onlines games are not at successful as the idea. And just like in every other IT industry, there are those who lead and those who follow.
Up to this point, there is no single shadow of a doubt that World of Warcraft is the best MMO out there. And frankly, this should be of no wonder, especially since World of Warcraft had all the elements that make up a huge gaming phenomenon: World of Warcraft was created by Blizzard probably the best video game development studio in the world (with huge names such as Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo under its belt) so it had the experience. What it also had was a huge universe that the game revolves around. Then, after the game was released, constant changes were made to the game to improve the gaming experience, doubled by the fact that new content was added to what was already a huge world. These elements put together created the game with the best success in video gaming history. But the topic of this discussion is notWorld of Warcraft, the topic is the new Star Trek Online MMORPG, that should be surfacing soon. But let’s try to figure out if it will be any good.
First of all, Star Trek Online obviously has one thing well covered: the gaming universe. With 11 films and no less than 6 television series that generated passions throughout the course of 40 years, the Start Trek universe is really as big as you can go when creating a video game. But not all games based on great universes turn out to be huge hits. You also need developers with either an artistic touch that can create games based on feeling, or you can have experienced developers that really know how to implement elements that work (while also being able to keep the game original, and not a clone). This is where the guys from Cryptic Studios come in. With MMORPG titles under the belt such as City Of Villains and City of Heroes, Cryptic Studios demonstrated that they do have that unique touch that makes up a great game. Now that they also have a fascinating and complex Star Trekuniverse to play with, chances are that Star Trek Online will be one of the best MMORPG’s ever created (maybe something like Starcraft was for the strategy genre). But this remains to be seen, as there have been times where Online RPG’s had all the proper tools, but did not manage to impress (Codemasters and Turbine INC, for example, made this quite clear with The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (LotRO or LOTRO)).
If you are already a MMORPG fan, you just have to try Star Trek Online. If you are not a MMORPG fan, you should give Star Trek Online a chance and you might become one. Either way you look at it, downloading the Beta Client for Star Trek Online is your chance of figuring out if you will be buying the game when it comes out on February 2, 2010.
